About this property

Welcome to The County Hotel, Carlisle

Situated in a grand Victorian building overlooking Carlisle's historic Citadel, The County Hotel offers a straightforward accommodation option in the heart of the city. Its location, just a block from the railway station and close to local bars, restaurants, and nightlife, makes it suitable for visitors seeking easy access to Carlisle’s central attractions.

The hotel features low-key, classic rooms that are generally spacious and clean, though some areas show signs of wear and could benefit from updating. Guest reviews often mention comfortable beds and adequate bathroom facilities, but highlight dated interiors and limited lighting as minor drawbacks. The building's character is noted, but the overall presentation leans towards practicality rather than luxury.

Facilities include a bar and a restaurant with a limited menu, where visitors can enjoy simple meals alongside a complimentary breakfast. Parking is available nearby but is limited and incurs additional charges, which guests should consider when planning their stay. Being LGBTQ+ friendly adds to the hotel's inclusive atmosphere.

The property's central setting places guests within walking distance of local points of interest such as Carlisle Castle, Carlisle Cathedral, and the Tullie Museum & Gallery. Nearby services, including food takeout and barber shops, provide added convenience for longer stays. Although the hotel’s 3.3 rating reflects a mix of experiences, it is considered a practical choice for travelers looking for a reasonably priced base in Carlisle’s city centre.

Conveniently located hotel. It was clean and with a comfy bed. Water pressure was fine and the water hot. However the building is very tired and dated. Crazy high ceilings and a single 60w bulb lighting it made it feel like a haunted house now than a hotel. The car parking is difficult to find and very small so there's no guarantee you will get a space. Staff were friendly and helpful. I think it fair to say you get what you pay for, I have no serious comments and it makes a change from the small modern rooms of the major UK basic hotel chains.

Cheap and cheerful a bit noisy due to it's town centre location but earplugs are provided Car park has gone up to £8 a night which is a bit expensive

Nice room and big enough. Very clean and decent size bathroom. Location is absolutely spot on. Only down side I had was the floor boards are very creaky. Other than that was great.

Good location. Comfortable beds. The room could do with some more lighting. The hotel is dated and looking tired in areas. You get what you pay for here and it does the job.

Lovely old building, obviously cared for. Rooms are spacious, very comfortable and so clean. Staff were friendly and helpful (special mention to Myko the barman, great asset to the hotel.) The food menu is very limited which lets the hotel down a bit, but what we had was nicely cooked. Would return if I was going to Carlisle again.

Excellent service from a very well priced hotel, friendly and helpful staff made both stays here a pleasure, located a short walk from the main shops, bars and restaurants it’s in an ideal place for anyone wanting to visit Carlisle. The castle is just a short walk too and well worth a visit with the military museum rounding off a perfect day out.

We had a really lovely weekend stay here. It’s a beautiful period-style hotel with a charming interior, and the reception staff were genuinely amazing: super helpful, welcoming, and accommodating. The fact that they’re dog-friendly was a huge plus for us. It’s a fairly big hotel with multiple floors, but the rooms are spacious, cosy, and warm. The heating worked perfectly, the bathroom was well-equipped (especially for a budget hotel), and everything was spotless. Honestly, hotels at this price point often cut corners on cleaning, but both the room and bathroom were impressively clean. Housekeeping also came every morning, which was great. We didn’t try the breakfast, but it’s available for £11 per person if you want it. A couple of minor downsides: the TV setup isn’t great, and there weren’t any remotes, so you have to change channels manually using the buttons on the side of the TV. The only real negative for us was the noise. This isn’t entirely the hotel’s fault, but better soundproof windows would make a big difference. If you’re on the street side, you’ll hear everything (late-night noise, drunk people arguing, kids singing at 3am etc.). Also worth mentioning: there’s no fridge in the rooms, but the staff kindly stored our medication and dog food in their fridge, which we really appreciated. Overall, we’d 100% stay again. It’s great value, comfortable, and the location is unbeatable (literally a 1-minute walk from the train station), so it’s perfect if you’re travelling onwards without needing taxis or buses.
